Shellac:
Shellac has been used for many of hundreds of years and was originally developed in India from an insect called the Lac Beetle. Traditionally, Shellac is associated with antique furniture and French polishing, although it can be applied with a wide range of uses. Shellac provides a good, hard base for Grimes & Sons Bees Wax Polish and can be used to freshen up old, dull timber surfaces. Used as a French polish, Shellac brings furniture up to a brilliant old world shine. Stubborn stains on plaster wall can be sealed back with Shellac prior to repainting with oil or acrylic paints.

New timber: Ensure surface is clean, dry and free from wax, grease, dust, etc. Sand smooth in the direction of the grain and dust off. If staining is required, use Grimes & Sons Interior Stain.

Previously coated surfaces: All loose and flaking areas should be sanded back to a firm, even surface for adhesion of subsequent coatings.

Application:
Stir thoroughly with a flat paddle, do not shake. Shellac is best applied with a pad made from a piece of open weave absorbent cotton material and cotton wool. Lay the material flat with the wad of cotton wool in the center, pour Shellac into the cotton wool and fold the material around to form a soft pad. The Shellac will seep from the cotton wool reservoir though covering material. Work Shellac into the timber surface with a figure 8 motion until the final coat, which should be applied in the direction of the grain. Pad can be put into a sealed jar for re-use. If applying by brush it is important to work quickly as Shellac dries rapidly. Allow 2 hours drying time and a fine sand between coats. ➀ ➅ ➇
